For years, alongside client work, there's been a dream project quietly taking shape in the background — and it's finally time to talk about it publicly.
Monkey Frog Studio has officially begun development on:
... a first-person shooter drawing inspiration from games like the original DOOM, System Shock 2, and Scorn. It's a project that's been years in the making, born out of a lifelong love of the genre and a specific itch that never quite got scratched by anything already out there.
Habitat is being built solo, from the ground up — concept art, 3D modeling, level design, and code, learned from scratch specifically for this project. It's an ambitious undertaking for one person, but it's exactly the kind of thing I've been wanting to sink my teeth into for a long time.
I won't be giving away much about the story — Habitat is built around discovery, environmental storytelling, and the kind of dread that comes from piecing things together yourself rather than being told. But I will say this: it's a game about a place that was never meant to hold you, and what you find when you're forced to learn its secrets on your own.
If you want to follow along with the actual development — the tools, the technical hurdles, the art process, the wins and the setbacks — there's a dedicated devlog over at the Habitat website, updated as real progress happens. This is a long game, in more ways than one. Years, most likely, before it's finished. But it's finally underway, and I couldn't be more excited to see where it goes.
